The name

Oscar’s real name was quite simple for me to choose.  I’m having a harder time coming up with his sister’s name.  Any suggestions?

I’m currently thinking of:

  • Hadley Piper (was my favorite until I found out that Palin’s daughter is named Piper, making it likely that Piper will become more popular, and therefore unacceptable to me)
  • Olivia (again, too popular, along with Isabelle, which I also love because of the “Izzie” option)
  • Schuyler (or Skylar)
  • Sabrina (one of my favorite characters in one of my favorite films)
  • Parker
  • Harper (I don’t know why I like this)
  • Morgan
  • Sloane
  • Peyton
  • Ella (love, but again . . .)
  • Addis (pronounced Addie)

*** And the winner?  Sabrina.  I just think it’s pretty, and we can call her Bree (not Brie, like the cheese). I will, of course, be deleting all references to her real name soon and will refer to her with a code name (like Oscar’s), but thanks to all of you who contributed!

  1. It’s funny that you mention Harper. I love it but also am not always sure why… haha.

  2. I really like Addison.

I would love to hear Oscars real name and it would be easier to know what kind of name you prefer. I just recently realized his name is not really Oscar. HAHA!!

  6. I love Sabrina!!! I also like harper and harlow… I LOVE Addis I almost picked this as the name of our little Ethiopian Princess. I really like unusual names I think we are going to name our little girl Riyo.

Yes we are using Childrens Hope International, I can’t remember if that was all you asked me so if there was more I’ll send you an email

You can call your little girl Zoe on the blog to keep the seseme street theme LOL

  7. By way of introduction: Love your blog, typically just lurk, brought my girl home from VN in Apr-08. My fav’s
Sabrina & Harper – Sabrina is beautiful and versatile, think Brina or Bri for an endearment – Harper is one I like too. Once you get her a certain name will fit. Harper may ultimately sound too distant not as warm and fuzzy as Sabrina. I ran into that with Holden, loved it until I actually imagined calling my child that. Good luck on your latest adoption journey!

  8. I love Hadly Piper, and since you’re using it as a middle name I wouldnt worry about the popularity of it because of Palin.

  10. My friend thought about Ridley – which I liked a lot. I have a friend who named her daughter Sloane, which you don’t hear very often and I like.

  11. Hey,
Sorry, just sticking my nose in here. I just happened upon you blog whilst looking for something else completely, and saw your list of names that you like.
If you think Isabelle’s too popular (which I guess it is….) but you like the nickname Izzie, what about Isadora?
Cute, nickname Izzie, original, not at all popular…

  12. Yeah, names are a difficult thing. My family likes to avoid the popular names too (we all managed to be the only ones in our school with our names). I do like Hadley Piper because I haven’t seen that name in use yet. Sabrina is also very pretty.

  13. By way of introduction: Love your blog…you are great at updating it often. I just brought my daughter home from Vietnam in July and she recently turned 1.
I have a friend with two girls named Hadley and Harper and I love both names. I love Ella too, but I think it’s more popular than Hadley or Harper. But really all of the names on the list are nice, so you can’t go wrong.

  14. how come some of the names are crossed out? why did you veto them?

    Comment by janina | September 21, 2008 | Reply

  15. Janina raises a good point. I vetoed these for the following reasons:

    Olivia – just too popular
Schuyler (or Skylar) – seems like it’s trying too hard
Parker – too many friends with kids named Parker
    Harper – too harsh
    Morgan – too ’80s
Sloane – too ’80s (reminds me of “Sloane Rangers” a Princess Diana reference – I am this old)
Peyton – universally considered too popular – especially in the south

  16. Hi Michelle,
This is unrealated to your daughter’s name although I agree that Piper should now be off the list (bummer though).

I was actually in your law school class and I am friends with your cousins Nikki and Neely. I am helping with our law school reunion planned for the weekend of October 18th in Iowa City and we didn’t have an e-mail address for you. Please write to me so I can give you details.
