Such a mom

Grandma and Grandpa are going to Hawaii with us!  We’re all very excited, but it’s made me reassess our accommodations and I thought I’d ask your advice.  We have three options – all of which are about the same price, surprisingly.  The first is a condo just a walk from the beach.  It’s really nice looking with a great kitchen (two – one inside and one out) and it has a sliding door that opens the lanai to the living room.  Aside from the beach, the bonus is a kids pool at the complex.  Downside?  It’s a condo and I think it’s not a great value.

The second is an actual house with a pool.  Brand new, with an ocean view and nice kitchen (as if I cook – but my dad does, so that’s why it’s on the list).  Downside?  It has a pool.  Love the idea of it, but I have an active toddler.  Upside?  It has a pool.  You understand the dilemma.  It’s also a drive to a sandy beach.

The third is a very unique hotel.  It’s actually a ranch, with horses and everything.  The accommodations are restored cottages, with every amenity (including daily maid service, which I sort of need).  Some have plunge pools.  Very nice.  Downside?  While there is a view of the ocean, the ocean is a ways away, which means we would need to drive to the beach. Thoughts?

  1. I’d go for the third option and try to get one with a pool. Maid service sells it for me. Obvioulsy you have to be careful with the pool, but I think you’ll be fine, especially with Grandma and Grandpa to help out.

BTW – I just nominated you for an award.

  2. I think I’d have to go for the one that would allow me the quick and easy walk to the beach.

  3. I’d take door #1. You have very close access to the beach (the reason you’re going is to be at the beach, no?) and it has a kids pool in the complex which means you won’t have to keep an eagle eye on the little one back at the house. My 2 cents!

  4. All great options, but it’s Hawaii so for me it would be all about the beach access. And sorry to say this but I have to add that I love the idea, hate the reality of a pool at the house. You cannot watch him all the time, its an accident waiting to happen at this age. Parents with kids put protective fences around pools for a reason. With my word of caution out of the way, let me say, sounds like a great trip, so nice you can travel with family, hope you have a wonderful time!

  5. From the sound of your description I’m thinking you may be talking about the Big Island and perhaps the ranch is Parker Ranch near Waimea? If not my comments won’t really mean much, but my family just returned from Waimea in February and while it is a great area, the downside is that it does rain there almost daily. Waimea is in this little pocket amongst the mountains/ocean and at a slightly higher altitude so the clouds get trapped there. A little rain isn’t really a bother, but this was every day for a large part of the day and it was quite a bit cooler there as well. Also the drive down to the warm beach got to be a hassle. If it was me I would definitely go with the place that’s on the beach…that’s what you go to Hawaii for right? And I agree with Sandra that accidents can happen in a split second and toddlers move fast so I would avoid the pool. Just my two cents! I’m sure you’ll have a blast whatever you choose and it’s wonderful that your parents can go and spend some time with you and your little one!

  6. I also vote for #1. I work in a Children’s Hospital ER and I don’t like pools without gates and toddlers. I think he would go for the kids pool as he will like having a pool his height and skill level. I love walking to/from the beach because there is fatigue and diaper incidents. I hate to think about loading up a car to go to/from the beach.

  7. Go Condo! Consider it value seeing as where it is-Hawaii AND on the beach.
I wouldn’t go near a place with a pool…Katie’s way too active…and I don’t think I’d want to spend my entire vaca in a car driving to the beach either. Bah!

  8. Near Beach – lots of room to run, explore. Billy loved going to the beach in Florida! Also nice to have a pool in complex if he likes to swim. When do you go? Ella can’t wait to meet Oscar!

  9. I would go for the condo. I’ve done both and having quick access to the beach is nice. I also agree a pool is a bad situation. At Easter Jacob ran out into the middle of my brothers pool cover. It was scary for all of us because it happened so fast. We had to lure him back with a piece of candy. None of us felt secure about walking on the cover to go get him. You guys will love the beach!

  10. You are on vacation get the maid service. A drive to the beach in Hawaii, are you kidding its Hawaii. Now if it’s an hour away or something close to that then take the condo but otherwise get the maid.
