While the viewpoint in the linked article is not popular with some of the more vocal adoptive parents in the international adoption community, I think this is at least worth a read. . .
Thanks for linking to this and helping get this post more traffic. I read it over the weekend and really appreciated it’s points. Good conversation following it also.
I guess I’m the freak of the week (what else is new) because I honestly thought it was a great article, and can see both sides. We want to give our children “back” what they didn’t get by growing up in their homeland, but at the same time, it is difficult when we aren’t from the culture ourselves. And let’s not forget, they are now American citizens as well…it all gets very muddled, doesn’t it? I think that balance is the most important. And balance is tough even in families without adopted children.
I will NOT:
- Sneak a peek at a waiting child list
- Adopt another child
- Give up Diet Coke
- Reschedule my children’s readoption because of work
- Cancel our trip to Disneyland because of work
- Work all night
- Eat all of the chocolate chip cookie dough I’ve prepared for Oscar and Etta
- Be anyone’s bitch

Exactly Kelley, It really is about getting the balance just right. Difficult to do but all we can do is try.
