What is wrong with people?

At some point in the future I hope to have some time of my own to actually write something myself, but in the meantime, I’ll leave you with this little treat from the AP:

“NEW ORLEANS – A white Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

“I’m not a racist. I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way,” Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. “I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else.”

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

“There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage,” Bardwell said. “I think those children suffer and I won’t help put them through it.”

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

“I try to treat everyone equally,” he said.”

I figure that’s enough of the article for you to get the gist of it.  The fact that people are so comfortable saying such things (let alone that they believe it, which is an entirely different and even more horrifying issue) is simply pathetic.

Seriously, “they use my bathroom”?

  1. I honestly thought it was a joke when a dear friend emailed me about it today… it makes me feel ill to think people still honestly believe such things. We seem to only make it so far…. My heartache for those who don’t see the joy of difference and the amazing people who aren’t just like themselves.

Hope you are holding up ok with the wait for Baby Etta… looks like you are moving up again. Congrats….

  4. “I try to treat everyone equally,” he said.”

Seriously? Treating everyone equally would mean that you issue a marriage license and marry a couple regardless of race, gender, religion, political views, etc., etc., etc. It certanly doesn’t sound like this judge is trying very hard to treat everyone equally.

I read this a few days ago and just keep wondering when he’s going to look in the mirror and admit the real reason behind his decision.

  5. What an idiot. Isn’t it so interesting that the more he attempts to explain it away, the more apparent the racism becomes?
